Coconut tree ( Cocos nucifera )

I’m like a child in a candy store when it comes to all these cool tropical plants. This is a novelty plant I stumbled across at Lowes.

Coconut trees supposedly provide all the necessities of life. Every part of the tree has some use. It is not known if the tree originated in Asia or South America but it can be found in most tropical places today. Coconut trees love sunlight and lots and lots of rain, and best of all for Houston, they need high humidity. They can survive an occasionally light frost.

A hard frost will kill them and Houston’s winters are really a bit colder than these plants would like. We shall see how it does over the next couple of years. The Florida keys, Hawaii are really the only places they do well in the US.

In the proper climate they can reach 80′ tall.

Houston winters are too cold for coconut. It died off its first winter here and that was a mild winter.
